Exploring Dormer Soil Samplers’ Hand Auger Solutions

Dormer Soil Samplers is a distinguished manufacturer specializing in hand auger soil sampling equipment, distributed across 97 countries.

Our product range encompasses several varieties of soil samplers, offering diameters from 50mm to 100mm, tailored to diverse soil conditions.

The fundamental open spiral augers are available in two primary sizes: 50mm and 62mm, each with options of 1.0M or 1.5M in length, which can be attached to plain tubular extension rods for incremental soil sampling. Beyond the 1.5m mark, excessive friction hinders the feasibility of maintaining a continuous spiral.

Additionally, we present a collection of ‘shell type’ soil samplers, incorporating a hollow tube design with various cutter styles optimized for distinct soil types. These come in nominal sizes of 50mm, 62mm, 75mm, and 100mm, with each ‘shell type’ sampler measuring 450mm in length.

These samplers are securely welded to a tubular shaft, available in lengths of 1.0M or 1.5M. This configuration ensures both operational comfort and facilitates seamless depth logging.

Within the ‘shell type’ category, the SOS model serves as a versatile, general-purpose soil sampler. The SA variant is designed for sand sampling, available in standard and Heavy Duty configurations to accommodate clean sand and sand with debris, respectively. For gravely soils, the SOD auger, known for its aggressive cutters, offers enhanced performance, although it may require more effort to operate.

The JA model, a compact, open-top sampler, is specifically designed for shallow soil sampling, suitable for depths of less than 1 meter. Our SP auger, an open spiral design, is primarily intended for drilling holes or penetrating hard soil layers.

The minimum diameter of our samplers is governed by the diameter of our plain tubular extension rods, facilitating incremental sampling beyond the 1.0-meter sampler length.

These extension rods, constructed from lightweight 40mm diameter tubing, feature a male connecting thread at the bottom, complemented by a corresponding female thread at the top. For your convenience, spring steel Tommy Bars (breaker bars) are included to aid in disassembling threaded connections.

Stones or gravel often pose a significant challenge for hand-operated samplers, as the cutters are unable to effectively engage with these obstructions. Consequently, the stones must be displaced either inside or outside the sampler. In gravely soils, the abundance of stones can cause the cutters to rebound, leading to erratic sampler movement and reduced penetration.

While a drill rig possesses the power to stabilize the auger and displace stones, manual operation lacks the precision required for this task. Even our motorized unit, the Drillmite, though potent, cannot entirely mitigate this issue, as human operators struggle to maintain stability when encountering stones.

Although it demands strength and persistence, manual operation can, at times, overcome these challenges. As an alternative, we offer various sizes of Star Drill and Stone Catcher attachments, designed to displace or pulverize stones as needed.

Many users prefer to relocate the borehole in the hope of bypassing stone encounters altogether.

In conclusion, Dormer Soil Samplers provides an extensive range of auger styles, each meticulously tailored to address specific soil conditions.

Our commitment to offering versatile solutions and comprehensive accessories, including various handle types (standard painted steel or ratchet), carry bags, toolboxes, and extension rods (aluminum, steel, or stainless steel), underscores our dedication to meeting your unique soil sampling needs.
